Lima is the capital and the biggest city of Peru. It was founded in the year 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, who defeated the Inca Emperor Atahualpa and imposed Spanish rule. He gave the city the name Ciudad de los Reyes (City of the Kings). It was one of the most important cities during the Spanish colonial period. The cathedral on the central square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, still remains from this period. In 1988 the historic centre of Lima was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lima's beaches are very popular during the summer months. You will find many restaurants, clubs, bars and hotels along the coast. The many waves of immigrants strongly influenced Lima's cuisine, which holds various Guinness World records for its diversity and quality.
